I was wondering ... all the great swordsmiths out there who makes great swords for low prices (thank God for that), are there any smith who takes requests on swords? You design it and they make it? I only found smiths who demands about one island nation in pricing for a custom made sword. :-O
Doesn´t Hanwei/Paul Chen or any other take custom orders?

From what Ive gathered (I tend to forget half), it might be cheaper and more fun to customize a sword to your liking yourself with furniture from various places.
there are a few great sites out there to find parts and service like wrapping in a new color and changing a saya.
----->insert customization links here<----- sorry need some sleep, believe me they're out there.
trust me, I know how it is not to be able to do it yourself, I have not the knowhow, the tools, the place or the time. and it might be slightly "budget unfriendly" but you can space it out over time and customize it in stages.
I say this under the "easier said than done" catagory knowing Ive never done it myself, But ive been very tempted to buy one of the nicer shirisayas from SOM and see what it could turn into with a little time and some web browsing.

Yeah I´ve thought about that, the problem is that I was wishing for a deeper curvation on the blade (just a litte bit deeper than the chens), with a nice sunwheeltsuba (like the PPK), silver habaki, PPK saya and maybe, just maybe if possible ... a tsuka that isn´t 100% straight but have a little curvation on it.

wow, maybe just find a tachi you like and overhaul it with hanwei gear and some pricey fittings..... again easier said than done.
I guess to answer your original question about custom swords, I personally dont know of any that would do it for under a couple grand so I am no help sorry

Great idea ninja! I've looked into custom swords, and figure you're gonna spend at least 4 grand for a truly custom rig.

Customs are pricey. Just a tanto alone take me about 50 hours to build depending on the style. You have to figure what it takes for the maker in hours, material, and skill to build -then put a price on it. For Katanas I buy them from Jason and redo the koshirae to my personal taste. Now SOM is carrying tsubas and ito which make it almost a one stop shop.
I have been looking for a decent priced and built Tachi, it is one style of sword that is not in my collection. That would be the best best for a curvature that you are looking for. Kudo's Ninja- good call.

I think I can with the proper instruction video/text custom my own if I get all the parts.
As I wrote before, what I´m looking for is:
- silver habaki.
- a blade with a little deeper curvation.
- tsuka-ito and sage-o in different colour (haven´t decieded yet).
- a tsuka that have a little curvation (no 100% straight).
- Sunwheel tsuba (like in the PPK), that I can get a hold of.
I haven´t seen any tachiblades in sale. :S

If you can't find what you're looking for at SOM,I'd recommend looking for one of the older Last Legend katana and customize it...the first pic is my 'Dragon' which has more sori than many others and continues into the nakago.
The other pic is of the 'Mikusa' family with yet a steeper sori and silver habaki...I think.

Oops didn't see that Mako posted the same thing
Try looking at a Last Legends Katana http://www.lastlegend.com/05kat/05kat.htm, they have .5" to 1" sori depending on the blade style, and all of the 3000 series have silver fittings. Tsuka ito and tsubas are easy fixes, you can do it yourself with a little time and patience. I just ordered a Kumoryu Reinami 3000 1090 without Bohi (which is the reason it had to be ordered), it should be here around Christmas, that is the thing about LL swords if you cannot find what you want in stock, you will have to wait about 6 months, but check Imperial Weapons in stock list http://www.imperialweapons.com/oriental/swords/in_stock_now.htm or try Sword Armory http://www.swordarmory.com/05kat/in_stock_now.htm

That is unbelievable. So much for the question on another thread of the practical use in todays world for a katana.

You're about 64 posts short of Jason by my count. but really.... I gotta get enough posts so I can get off of this assassin stuff and then I have to get by elite death dealer, those names make me nervous.

You might want to look into JWHotSteelForge they sell on ebay but they have done some custom/ semi-custom work for members at SBG sword forum heres a link to one of the reviews http://sbgswordforum.proboards70.com/index.cgi?board=swordreviews&action=display&thread=4725

No thanks, I think that's reserved for someone else. Don't try to put that off on me. I wouldn't want to steal anyone's thunder. And what's with you and pampers anyway?

I don't know about Seagal, but that post sounded very much like something Joelybob would do! :-O

Oh yeah, I couldn't stop laughing. Kind of made my day.
I actually know people who would do something like that, they just wouldn't be stupid enough to admit it or brag about it. Depending upon where you live, the scenario is plausible.
You know the old "He lost his fingers when I slammed the car door on them defense" =))
bobO
June 30th, 2008, 08:31 PM
You might know more people like that then you think! Wonder if he kept the fingers, you know " I cut em off, there mine now", type of thing. I've been watching to much kill bill. Ninja, I liked the whole diapers of death thing myself.

Wow, I know that there are people out there that have a vivid imagination, but they never cease to amaze me. If I attacked someone stealing my car with a sword that would be on CNN before I could wipe the blade off. (IMPORTANT TO WIPE THE BLADE OFF TO AVOID UNNESSESARY PATINA OR BLEMISH TO BLADE) -Trust me I have bled on enough of my own steel to know.
BobO - do you think he made a necklace out of them?
Okay I has better stop now before Steven shows up on my door step seeking to avenge his honor.
Still LMAO

Remember you need at least 3 fingers to make a necklace look good, and it helps to know a good taxidermitist?
Gold turns green, but fingers get stinky! =))
Old joke, stinky fingers, Bob-O remember being a teenager? :))
=; Hey guys, I was out on a date last night, smell my fingers!
:-SSThis is the same guy, sitting in study hall, smelling his fingers, remembering his date last night!
Hey wait a minute, I forgot your back in the dating world, I can see you at the SOM gathering after NINJA brings all them strippers.
If Bob-O asks you to smell his fingers, watch out!
But whatever you do, DON'T ever, ever, ever, ever "pull" his fingers!!! :hahaskull:

Cheness Cutlery will make custom swords, but only for large orders, so in retrospect I guess this post is pointless. So sorry. I am unworthy.
