Another one! Goose you lucky duck (pun intended) how many nihontos do you have now? and the hamon on that sword is quite lame (no offense to the maker) I just don't like boring hamons.

June 18th, 2008, 01:45 PM
Sairon
This makes three nihonto, and i do agree the hamon on this one is (let me say "tame") but i choose this one because a- it was availible
B-in my price range and C- because it was fully dressed with period koshira. The muromachi period ran (1335-1575) approximately this is an early muromachi and i would guess around 1400(my guess) so i snatched it!also it came with papers. we'll see when i get it up close if i like it or send it back. I have that option always.
and yes i am a "lucky duck" pun intended and accepted! thanks Sairon

Sairon,
You have really got to learn some sword forum etiquette, you really come across as quite rude and unknowledgeable. This is not the first time you have done this. You appear to be trying to BS your way through this Forum with comments such as this, much like a child trying to have a conversation with men. You are lucky the Forum members are so polite here to allow some of the comments you have made, and indulge you the way they have. On other Forums you would have been ostrasized a long time ago.
I would like to know the credentials you have to proclaim the hamon on that sword is lame. If you don't have any, it is best you shut your mouth and keep your comments to yourself.

I myself have been quite surprised by the availability and prices of nihonto. I think some day, maybe...! What I like about the old ones, is that for the most part, they are the real battle worthy deal. And every now and then you'll see one with battle damage, to cool!
goose710
June 19th, 2008, 06:06 PM
Yes Bob-o
I've seen some with the battle marks left by the polishers, as a mark of honnor! not as a blemish.
I like the old ones also, for the history they have Imagen, that this small piece of steel (remember they rust easily) has been cared for ,and handed down through many generations of family.Has been appreciated for it's beauty for hundreds of years! nothing like this exists in the states! after all we've only been here a mere 300yrs. also the reverence these family hierlooms are treated to. Hell find a sword from the civil war? don't look half as nice as any nihonto does, no reverence, is the key, respect for the forfathers, respect for the sword!
ah ranting again, but i do feel strongly about this. It seems to be lacking in the here and now . Not just here in the states but to an extent world wide. The old ways , are being lost, money, fast gains, and self gratificating is the norm. Ten year apprenticships?? they laugh at you!!! work for a company two weeks figure they should own it!
Ok enough rant.
Honor the ones that went before

Goose,
You are 100% on the money with your comments. I truly feel a kinship with so many on this forum. I am humbled by the knowledge and experience so many have.
Sairon,
Dotanuki is right, we chalk it up to inexperience I hope, and I hope you will take as Nansoji has in the past, he has learned. It is really rude to ask anyone how much they pay for anything and I thought Goose was very gracious to you when you asked. If you really want to know how much Nihontos cost, look some up on a web site, ask for a range of what you might expect to pay if you want to buy one, but don't ask someone how much they spent, they spent what it took to get it.
bobO
June 19th, 2008, 06:35 PM
It's not ranting if it needs to be said. I was at a pool party, my friends 81 yr old dad was there, he told me to do something, I jumped on it, then asked if there was anything else, he commented that I knew how to respect my elders. I told him what kind of man would I be if I didn't. Old school I guess?
Jason Moore
June 20th, 2008, 11:29 AM
Not old school, just who you are. I don't think respect is something that is taught, it is a choice.
Dotanuki
June 20th, 2008, 12:52 PM
Not old school, just who you are. I don't think respect is something that is taught, it is a choice.
While I agree that some are born with the common sense to know how to interact with others, with respect and courtesy. As a result are treated with the same respect and courtesy in return.
I have seen respect taught also, my father always taught me to respect my elders, not just by words, but his actions towards his own elders.
My father always told me to make friends with the old-timers, if they like you, you will learn things in life that might take decades otherwise [if ever]. That was his secret of success, by being friends, he did not mean making them your buds, but your teachers. It worked for me my whole life also. It is also working for my son also with the same success.
I have also seen respect taught to the discourteous, by having it beat into them! [literally, with fists]. You would be surprised at the high success rate this method has. [very high!]

Superb, I really like the Sugu Hamon, allot of people think they are plain, but I would imagine it takes more tallent to do one perfect. Overall it looks to be in great condition, nice tsuba, the fittings appear to be in good condition, the saya looks great, good buy my friend. You got any plans for it? If I quite buying everything that catches my eye, I could probably save up enough to buy a decent Katana one of these days
goose710
July 8th, 2008, 02:24 AM
Brian
I thought to replace the ito because it's quite stained and worn, but my wife likes it that way . She says it should look like that as old as it is.
Truth be told, the tuska is a little loose from wear, but , what i might do is have another one made, but then it'll need to use the (hard ware) and i'll lose the tuska anyway. So i'll leave it be i like it,hamon is pretty cool really, it has that shadow just behind the hamon line , there's a name for that but it excapes me now. It's sharp, and polished well, a loose fold maybe (line in the hada) but not open
Actually it was quite reasonable over all, considering any tsuba is worth $500.00. the habaki is two piece silver gold washed (i think) which would indicate a bit upscale ?? copper being the norm??
I'm happy with it.

Wow, I love it. The saya has a great finish and texture to it, it looks awesome. I have to agree with the wife Goose, leave the ito. I think the character of the sword would change if you replaced it( Just my opinion). What a beautiful sword, the suguha hamon was made for cutting and preferred for cutting test by the Yamanos.
