I just thought this was interesting, I didnt know there were that many forms of lamination.

http://www.geocities.com/alchemyst/laminate.htm

also i didnt know the "maru" lamination that some sites seem to use as a selling point means non-laminated.

Generally, as i understand it, the lamination was developed because Japan had really bad iron and needed to do something to make that poor metal into a decent sword.
With modern mettalurgy and super-steels, that isn't necessary anymore.
Still... there is something about my folded steel katana that just 'feels' better than my spring steel or RR-track steel katana, even though all three are equal in all qualities.

I have found though that a lot of cheapie sellers will use borderline terms to imply that their swords are excellent.
"Battle Ready" whatever that means.
"Fully Hardened" which mean 'shatters like glass'.
"po-Edo" to imply it is old when that actually means modern.
and so on.

Sometimes you have to be an expert to just avoud the frauds.

But according to Zheng-wu.com

1 maru usually hrc 48e/48b: mono steel
2 kobuse hrc 58e/42b: 2 types of steel
3 san-mai hrc 56e/41b: 2 types of steel
4 hon san-mai hrc 60e/45b:3 types of metal (iron used on spine)
5 Shihozume hrc 60e/45b: 4 types (iron used)
i don't know if this is correct but i have seen the terms "maru" and "San-mai" on several other sites so....:-/

Nah...it's not my site,I wish I was that knowledgable...it belongs to Dr Rick Stein who is regarded as being one of the World's leading authorities on Nihonto and it's where I get a lot of information from and you're right...it is amazing.;)
