August 7th, 2009, 03:47 PM
Thanks guys..I know it's not much, but I am very proud of the ones I have..Have only been collecting (with the exception of a SS wallhanger Highlander sword) since christmas this past year when i got my first carbon steel as a gift.
Andy, I am very pleased with my Snowfall kat. The only problem I've had with it so far is the habaki is loose in the mouth of the saya. Gonna get some birch veneer and take care of that soon. This one is gonna be semi-customised..I'm gonna either enamel or powder-coat the tsuba and fuchi/koshira from the black to white, have the tsuka re-wrapped battle style with white silk, and redo the sageo ito with heavier silk ito. It doesn't look very sharp because of the blade geometry (when compared to others designed mainly for light cutting and have a thin edge) but it is very sharp. Haven't had a chance to get out and cut with any of mine yet, but am really looking forward to it. I had been wanting one for a long time and had to wait for them to come back in stock. I jumped on it as soon as they did and as soon as I had the funds to do so..lol

nice collection mate!! good taste also
how do you store them?, you should get one of those wall stands for several swords to proudly display them (unless you already have one or something better) :ohyeah:
knightkat1
August 11th, 2009, 11:47 PM
Thanks Caliper...Right now, I have them in their original boxes and sword bags they came in. I was out of work for so long last year that I ended up having to give my place up and have been staying with my parents until I can get back up on my feet..I have the $$ for a place, just nothing available right now...
I have several assorted types of stands and hangers for a variety of display options and for sets, plus a few for individual. I have plans to get one of the eight sword hangers from Jason here in the next few weeks.
Thanks again guys for the compliments..One day, I hope to amass a collection comparable to some of yours.

Woa, you're quickly gathering a nice collection there dude :flaming:
The Musashi erally is the best bang for yout buck, and a shame about kawashima being no more, they did some nice kats
ummm, I don't see what you mean Mick about the Tsuba designs, the snowfall, mizuiro, hayari, youkou and kihei which were all from their 1095 line have very different tsuba designs, or are you referring that they are all with 3d art?
knightkat1
August 29th, 2009, 04:19 PM
Thanks guys..I had completely forgotten about Kawashima closing down..Their 1095 like is very nice..lightweight and fast, but the steel is very strong, and holds a great edge..
Blade, I can only compare the two I have, but the tsuba seem very unique to me.Iam wondering the same as Caliper though, were you meaning about the kawashima tsubas or just the "3D" look in general?

If you dont mind me saying...
That is one freakin' beautiful lookin sword! I think it'd be a total shame to even cut with it because of just the beauty of the blade and everything....I sure couldn't bring myself to cut with it if I had one that looked like that

Dragon, I thank you for the compliment..I seriously doubt I'll be using this one for cutting anytime soon, if again at all lol I had the opportunity to do some "backyard tameshigiri" over the summer, and used this one before the customization. It cut very cleanly. But now, I really don't wanna take the chance of dirtying up the tsuka ito again like i had with the original ito. Robby even wrapped it in plastic cling wrap before shipping it back out to me, and I'm thinking about leaving it on there while it's displayed just to keep residual dust from working its way into the ito.
DragonGuardian
October 14th, 2009, 06:47 PM
I'd think tha's a wise idea, keep the dust off as white is extremely sensitive to dust and the like.

Thanks Mick! If memory serves right, the one I have is Duncan's sword, 1'st generation, because of the "flattened and squared" closed mouth dragon head. Connor's was 2'nd gen, and had the rounded open mouth dragon's head (like my mini daisho set). Why they had the MacLeod kats switched around lik that, I have no idea. Seems like it would have been more sense, making Connor's the 1st gen, and Duncan's the 2'nd. Then, they did a 3'rd gen that has the tail wrapped around the tsuka seperating the carved scenes.

I've been waiting since Sept. for this to be made and shipped out. Finally arrived this morning. SBG's custom design your own katana. You get to choose blade length and style (bo-hi or no), ito color, saya color, tsuba style, fuchi/koshira style, same color, etc. High odds that no one will duplicate yours. T10 high carbon, high speed tool steel, DH, with natural, un-enhanced hamon.

Had been thinking about doing this one for awhile now. Wanted something to go with the blue ito and also to set it off on a roack with so many others with a black saya. All I have done so far is the sanding of the saya. Took it down to 220 and is ready for priming, a day of drying, then 600 wetsand to smooth out. In the end, I want it to be about the same blue as the ito. Contemplating black sageo to go with fittings.

After searching and finally finding as close a blue as I could, I finally got about 10 coats of color on saya. After every 3-4 coats, I'd wet sand with 600g, rinse well, and let dry for a few days, then repeat. Here's pics of before I applied first coat of poly to it today. Also looking for input on which sageo looks better: the original blue or the black to go with furniture. Have also included a pic of set-up on my table saw, using clamps and the rip fence, i made to be able to apply poly to saya w/o touching it. No worries, it's a cheap stainless blade in the saya lol

Well, almost lol still gotta polish with some extra fine polishing paste, then wax and buff out.
But, here it is with10 coats of primer, 8 coats of paint, and 15 coats of polyurethane on it, wet sanded with 600grit after every 2 coats of each. Then, left to dry 24hrs for any residual moisture. Then, repeat lol. Been very lucky, weather has been fairly warm n humid, with only a few straight days of rain.

That is a sweet job ya done there, for sageo, i think not black, but maybe royal blue to offset the powder blue saya, or maybe one of those two color jobs like blue with a white thread running through it??

I put alot of heart into the work I do. It really shows me that I am doing good work in order to not only receive the compliments, but also receive the rep also. Once again, Thank you guys! But I still feel "I'm not worthy! I'm not worthy!:bow:" LOL!

I can't take any credit what so ever for the color of the ito on the tsuka. It came that way. It was stock color, which is why I got it, and what I based the color of the saya on when departing from the normal black. The only part I can take credit for is the refinishing of the saya.

Honestly, from a slightly more artistic viewpoint, I think it works great...you could have gone with black, yes, but the deep blue helps unify the colors more, I think.
