Considering the cost of restoring and Fred Lohmann's fine custom work she may have you there Gooseman! Just an aside, the stand looks great but you may wish to add another sword. From what I've been told the number of swords on a kake is not usually an even number (exception for Daisho) as even numbers are considered unlucky, the numbers are mostly odd (7,9,11 etc). The Kake that was gifted to me holds 13 swords. We really need Dotanuki to comment on this!.. KK p.s. An awesome collection by the way...

I don't see the Kanemune that he stole from under my nose KK, so that would make it 9. ~X(
I've no idea about the number of swords displayed but here's something to ponder regarding unlucky numbers...

Q. Are there any unlucky numbers in Japan?
A. The Japanese don't like the number 4 and 9 because of their pronunciation. Four is pronounced "shi" which is the same pronunciation as death. Nine is pronounced "ku" which has the same pronunciation as agony or torture.
There are many hospitals that don't have these numbers as the room number or even the floor number. The Japanese also dislike Friday the13th, though many of them are not Christians. There are no seats with numbers 4, 9 and 13 on passenger planes of the All Nippon Airways.
On the other hand, the number 8 is considered a lucky number. This is because of the shape of the kanji character for eight (http://japanese.about.com/blkod70.htm). The two strokes are wider at the bottom, suggesting a better time or better things to come in the future.
Click here (http://japanese.about.com/bl_number.htm) for Japanese Numbers.

Thanks Mako. Now for word from Dotanuki on this. I was informed of the even/odd number concept when I was given my kake and inquired as to the number of spaces (13). Maybe I just got lucky! ;) KK

KK,

I believe your kake having 13 spaces is very significant to the tradition you are studying and probably the line of succession also, but in this case it doesn't neccessarily correspond to other related incidences outside your tradition. I will send you a PM of what I believe the significance of the 13 spaces mean, as I could be wrong in my speculation.
Although you are right about odd numbers being more powerfull than even numbers as far as martial arts mysticism, especially 3, 5 and 9. With 9 being the most powerfull number in martial arts mysticism. I was surprised at the unlucky connotation Mako came up with. Although what happens or is perceived in the martial arts world is not neccessarily the same as the normal mundane world. I couldn't see a practitioner of the warrior arts being worried about the word shi, (4 or death) while it might terrify the normal man.
I could understand a person in the hospital not wanting to go to room 'death' or room 'agony'. In my stays to the hospital I beleive I was in both those rooms a few times, LOL!
BTW, 4 and 9 equal 13, so a visit to hospital room 13 would be agony, torture and death!! :hahaskull:
Also on airplanes, aren't seats arranged in groups of two and three? So there probably aren't seat numbers for 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12 either? Probably A1, 2, 3, and B1, 2, 3, this is just speculation on my part, as it just sounds cool to perpetuate the theory of unlucky numbers.
Also,......
Eight is 'the' lucky number in the Orient, so it makes sense to have a personal kake of 8 spaces.
I checked through all my sources, In Japan, the kake's on the dojo walls have 10, 11, 12, 16, 18, 24 spaces (just the ones I counted), there were probably more. The reason for all the even numbers (I believe) is that the older arts rely a lot on partner practice, hence even numbers, if a stand did have a uneven number, maybe the uneven number was for the instructor's weapon? (speculation)
I noticed also a lot of the training weapons were sometimes double stacked (2 per space), I would have thought also there would of been more 18 space stands (the 18 weapons/arts) but it seemed as though the count was whatever spaces that could fit. Although this, like all things, would probably vary from school to school.
I've learned a long time ago, never say something for certain, because for 'certain' there is always an exception, somewhere out there. Especially in the martial arts world!

goose, just my personal opinion, but I did like your Nihon-To Daisho displayed better separately though, on their own kake.:ohyeah:
Hey, just buy 2 more swords! =))

Thank You very much Dotanuki. I knew there had to be a reasonable explanation for the odd numbered spaces. I was aware of eight being lucky in Chinese tradition but was not sure if it applied here! For extra luck one could always paint their kake red! I jest, I jest.. Still envious of your wonderful collection Goose! KK
