hi bobo
i think you will like these three one has a brown buffallo hide sheath the kuk has a purple heart wood handle the blade is a copy of the m43 style
ww2 if that means owt to you the second has an all brass handle and the blade is beautyfully engraved both sides with fancy pagodas and dragons the third is a chitlangi style kukerie with dragons engraved both sides of the blade brass fittings now the scabard is the thing made of indian rosewood nicely carved as is the handle and inset with brass inlays of the national bird fish & flower of nepal plus other inlay types the purple heart wood was a special order that was never paid for still his loss my gain now the brass one even the two small knives the chakmack & karda exscuse the spelling have nicely finished brass handles any way you,ll see whats what when i post the pics
just a couple of rough pics for now the one with the silver filigree work i hope to get at a later date

Great looking Kurkris you got there, Love the M43 ( wasn't that a WWI model? not a WWII.) The size and shape of the blade is great, shows what a Kurkri looked like when it was a primary back up weapon...

hi illmade
im not quite sure about the info on the m43
im only using the oridginal khukeri sellers info whom i belive
was a real avid kuk collecter he had two rooms in his house
with kuks on all four walls then a small room stacked with two foot by three foot plastic containeers full of real nepalese khukeris i bought 27 of him in various sizes from a beautifull little one 6 inches long with a brass blade probably a letter opener to a two handed one fourty inches long used ceromoniously in beheading bulls/waterbuffalos in religious ceromonies now that bugger was at least an inch thick across the spine
funny thing is the neihbours allways seemed to give me a wide berth when i was sat in the garden giving it a nice polish never could understaned why=))bloody shame of it is it was sold before i could buy it back from the guy i sold it to ah well at least im getting most of the others back

Great blades Mick. ;)
Not sure about the M43 but from what I can make out it's an upgrade of the MkII issued during WWI...lots of speculation on that from different sources though.
Off topic:
[Rant/on]
What I can say, with certainty and to my disgust, is that The High Court has just rejected the claim that vets of 'The Royal Ghurka Rifles' are not entitled to the same Army Pension as British soldiers and don't even have the right to stay in the U.K. on retirement after they've served and fought with great tenacity for this country for well over a 100 years while thousands of other Asians are allowed entry every year who can't even be bothered to learn English.
Thought I'd pop that in so our friends across the seas will know how much "Honor, Loyalty and Brotherhood" adds up to in the eyes of those who've done nothing but sit on their fat arses.
Sorry guys but it's something that's left a nasty taste in my mouth.
[Rant/off]
Back on topic:
I've always loved the Khukri but never been able to use one with the same dexterity as the Nepalese...or maybe I'm just 'ham fisted'. :)

March 27th, 2009, 07:50 PM
Did some checking, as Mako said the M43 was a varient (sp?) of the MII which was in production from 1917 till 1944, so the M43 seems to be a transitional design and did see service in WWII, the only real difference between the MII and the M43 seems to be the handle....

At SFI there are some great guys in the kukris section, a wealth of knowledge. When we talked as children about the Ghurka's, it was always with awe and respect. Everyone knows you don't mess with those guys. Shame there's know one to stand up for them.

Aye...those guys are about the closest to Samurai that anyone will encounter in the Western world but it's yet another case of...'You've outlived your usefulness,so here's a few bucks for your years of devotion, now bugger off and don't come back'. ~X(

I love them ! you truely have a collection to be proud of!
I do have a question though, how has the new legislation over there (regarding owning knives and swords ) affected your collecting? Can you still get what you want? without giving up your first born?

hi goose
(we can collect katanas kuks vertualy any bladed weapon we want
if they are handmade in the traditional manner using traditional materials)
as you know the law was changed awhile back to try and stop the rise in knife crimes over here so any thing curved over 50 cms was immediatly illegal the idea being to get rid of all the cheap stainless steel crap at a stroke later the law was ammended to allow the above in brackets to be sold again but it wasnt illegal to keep the stuff we allready had the only stainless steel swords
i belive we can now buy now over 50 cms are straight ones we can buy
any sword as long as its high carbon steel ask mako he will give you a better answer than i can
regards mick

The original wording of the ban meant that only 'swords which are hand made in Japan using the traditional method' (shinsaku-to) were exempt along with those which had provenance of being at least 100 years old...questions about Gunto and Shin Gunto blades remain unanswered.
The wording was amended to 'swords which are hand made anywhere using the traditional method', this reopened the door to any manufacturer who claims that his swords comply with the legislation but importing a production sword as a private individual is extremely risky...even Customs Officers freely admit that they don't know what is or isn't legal, so everything is seized and the onus is placed upon the buyer to prove legality in Court which costs around $3,000 for a hearing which may not be successful.
Apparently, this doesn't apply to registered dealers and they can import and sell almost any blade which isn't a direct contravention of the law and has allowed them to jack their prices up.
