It's a ginunting if you're taking about the one with the black handle and brass fittings, generally they are longer and used by the Filipino marines of the Philippines

If its Filipino it really depends on where it came form and which dialect they speak there. Ginunting is one of the same words they use for scissors and is often applied to blades of a similar shape. So yours is a ginunting in many places but so are these, in Bicol at least

In general the terms are used very loosely in the Philippines. It could also be called a bolo or a sundang in many areas. Those words just refer to larger knives. The cross guard does look a little unusual but it could have been a custom request that wasn't paid for and got sold differently or maybe just something the knife-maker wanted to try. There are always alot of variations in Filipino designs. Just look at the minasbad in my collection.

That type of blade is designed for cutting sugar cane (something yours looks rather suited to, which would make the handguard useful vs stalks that didn't cut clean but slid up the blade) but mine has a knuckle shield and an enclosed hand-guard as a fighting sword would. Thats on there just because the maker got ahold of an old brass casing from a tank ammunition and though he would make something with it.

I'll bow to your experience Firehand I was only going on what I had seen on TV and the web and we know how far off that can be from the truth..

Even today the tradition of the Filipino Kali Fighters is alive. Currently in the Philippines a special unit of the Filipino Marines, the Force Recon, is trained in Pekiti-Tirsia Kali to prepare them for Guerilla warfare and jungle combat. Because experience showed that fire arms are not offering sufficient protection in Guerilla warfare in the jungle or cities, the Ginunting (a short sword) has been added to the equipment of the Force Recon. The soldiers of the Force Recon are learning the use of the Ginunting for close combat and also the methods of Pekiti-Tirsia Kali for countering disarming attempts (weapon retention) and also the methods for empty hands fight against knife and the strategies and tactics for empty hands close quarter combat against fire arms.
