And another opens. We just had a martial arts school open 5 miles from my house. They teach Haedong Kumdo! Ever since I saw that Korean sword chick, I,ve wanted to learn this style and now is my chance. They also teach Hapkido, which I studied just a little, and loved. Also what's a Ssag Jul Gon, any one know what that is? The price is high, but what price knowledge. What say guys, should I go for it? Should be fun, although to empty my cup sword ways should be a challenge. The wooden sword for this style is 60$, can you beat that Jason. Firehand, Find dem swords will ya! Ssag Jul Gon are nuchaka.

Bob - Go for it! My brother takes Tang Soo Do at the West Haven Academy of Karate (WHACK) and they also have Haidong gumdo classes immediately following TSD. It's a korean art (which I'm sure you are aware of) so the terminology is different. I believe the equivalent of a bokken is a mok-gum - both are wooden "swords". I believe any bokken would do, however the school in which my brother attends, they use iaitos (or atleast from what I've observed).
If there was one sword art I would like to practice it would be haidong gumdo - it's extremely "flashy" and that's what I love about it. I would say it's definetely worth the price if you can afford it

bobO; do it brother......you can never have too much education in any subject.......unfortunately I recently found out the hard way that my body is too damaged to do any martial arts training, so I just have to be content with my backyard cutting.......although I refuse to do the storied "fall on your sword" exercise........I think you can only do that once successfully =)).........do you think the neighbor's kid will put a grape on his head so I can try to shave it into 3 pieces with my PPK? :) They say Sir William Marshall defeated an opponent in a sword fight at age 70!.......reckon where I could find a 70 year old man to sword fight with? :SandS:

I don't know,....................
I think the last person in the world you would want to fight, is a 70 year old man that is still practicing swordsmanship (of any kind!) :hahaskull:
You know what they say about messing with the old tigers,........
How do you think they got to be old??
Go and read Mako's old post, about the ages of the 47 ronin.
Bob-O,
Better check with the school first, they may want you to buy only their equipment. This is a common occurence in a commercial school.

Yup, Did that and Yup gotta buy there stuff (60$ for a bokken!). Jason I did drop your name and SOM, to no avail, I think. I would really like to go where Jason is going, but the distance is a bummer, especially in the winter. I like the sensei guy(or what ever you call him in korean) and I'm stoked on this kumdo. And Hapkido has shown me the way to the floor before, so that will be fun! He just doesn't do the cane thing, bummer. Also can't use my gi, it's black. Plus I'll get one of them there belts. School just opened, so I'll get in on the ground floor, with small class sizes. I might stand at the bottom of the steps and tell everyone teacher is sick, no classes today.

If he is a master his title would be Kwan jang nim. If he is just an instructor his title would be Sa bum nim.
Good luck with your training.

Thanks! Sadly those are most of my martial art pics. Pretty bad for 10 years worth. I look forward to being on this forum, and learning as much as I can.

lol Yeah... I'm not to sure about that one. :) That's a shame he wasn't a good instructor. It's hard to find a good instructor sometimes. Plus a style that you like, and an instructor that you can get along with. Which I think is very importain, but then again I up there almost every day. Well, I hope you can find some place else to continue your training. Good luck!
