There is no difference between understanding and Bushido (way of the warrior, or chivalry). They are interwoven and interdependent, like the bow and arrow. the target being internal progress.
The following are verses from an unknown Japanese master.
This sometimes is refered to as the Samurai creed.
I have no parents;
...I make the heavens and earth my parents.
I have no home;
...I make saika tanden (abdominal region), my home.
I have no divine power;
...I make honesty my power.
I have no means;
...I make humility my means.
I have no magic power;
...I make personality my magic power.
I have neither life, nor death;
...I make a um (breath regulation) my life and my death.
I have no body;
...I make courage my body.
I have no eyes;
...I make the flash of lightning my eyes.
I have no ears;
...I make sensitivity my ears.
I have no limbs;
...I make instananeous movement my limbs.
I have no laws;
...I make self protection my laws.
I have no strategy;
...I make freedom to kill and freedom to give back life (sakkatsu jizai), my strategy.
I have no purpose;
...Opportunity is my purpose (kisan = I sieze the opportunity).
I have no miracles;
...I make righteous laws my miracles.
I have no principles;
...I make rinkiohen (adaptability to all circumstances) my principles.
I have no tactics;
...I make existence and the void (kyojitsu) my tactics.
I have no talent;
...I make quick mind/ready wit (toi sokumyo) my talent.
I have no friends;
...I make my mind my friend.
I have no enemy;
...I make incautiousness my enemy.
I have no armor;
...I make benevolence and righteousness (jin-gi) my armor.
I have no castle;
...I make fudoshin (immoveable mind) my castle.
I have no sword;
...I make mushin (abscence of mind/no-mind) my sword.
I used to keep a copy of this in my locker at work, and another at the dojo. These words have given me direction in my life.
I come to this Forum so often, I figured I might as well put up a copy here as well.
As with all written things, the interpertations are endless. Remember also, this is japanese thought patterns/logic.
